More Laurenisms and the Gateway..

Before I get to into this post, I just want to say to Kari Congradulations!! (Chad's little sister) She is a mommy for the first time and I couldn't be more happy for her. And I love that Lincoln came right before Mother's day.

Now for my funny little Lauren. Ok, Chad's little brother is in the Army. He is in Alabama(I think) learning how to be a helicoper pilot. When he is all done, he will fly the Blackhawk helicopters.

Here is a picture of him during his flight school that I stole off of his facebook page. (I hope he doesn't mind). Anyway, all of this goes along with my story. Everytime we are in Wal-Mart, or the Mall, or wherever and we see someone in an Army uniform, Lauren always gets excited. And since she is our little social bug, she has to talk to said Army person. This is usually how the conversations go:

LAUREN: Hey, are you in the Army?
G.I JOE (OR JANE AS THE CASE MY BE): Yes I am.
LAUREN: My Uncle Ryan is in the Army. He flys helicopters.
G.I PERSON: Wow really, that is great.
LAUREN: Yes. Do you know my Uncle Ryan?

Ok, I totaly get that you proboly have to be listening to her while the words are coming out of her mouth to get the extent of just how cute it is. No matter how many times she has this conversation with various Army people, she always ends up sounding so stinkin' cute. So innocent and small the world is for a four year old.

BACKSTORY #2: Lauren is such a sweet girl and so smart that I sometimes forget that she is only four years old and I really expect her to act older then her age. Most of the time she does, but when it comes to books and her sippy cup, she acts all of ther four years of age. I was down the hall putting makeup on in the bathroom when I hear Evan scream and then proceed to cry. I run down the hall to see Evan's big tears and Lauren's mad face.

ME: Lauren? What happened?
LARUEN: I don't know (her favorite answer)
ME: Yes you do. Why is Evan crying?
LAUREN: Well, I don't know, but I guess (long pause) I would say that he was trying to take "someone's" sippy cup away, and then "someone" pulled his hair. Because it is not his, it is "someone" ealses sippy cup.

I then tryed my hardest not to laugh while I put "someone" in time out.

Now for the gateway. I wanted to get out of the house so bad. I wanted to go see Kari, but I had the kids and I couldn't find anyone to watch them. I instead convinced Chad that he needed to take his wife to Salt Lake if he wanted his wife to stay happy tonight. So he did, and it was fun. We went to Barnes and Noble, I really can not NOT go there when we are at the Gateway. We went to the Apple store. Chad can not NOT go there when we are at the Gateway. We went into the sporting goods store and while we were there, we let Lauren and Evan play in the camping equipment display while we took picures untill a store clerk told us that photography wasn't allowed in the store. Oh well, I think we got some cute pictures anyway.

We were almost done and on our way out when the music for the fountian show thingy came on and Lauren wanted to see it. It is no Balagio, but hey, she is four. Lauren's eyes light up as she watched the water shoot up from the ground. She kept saying that it was "magical".

It seriously takes no money in this entire world to put that kind of smile on a little girls face, it only takes your time. And isn't that smile well worth all of my time? Evan loved it too, but Evan is such a water baby.

So that was our day at the Gateway. I started with a couple of Laurenisms and I am going to end with one, since it happened just today. Before we left, Lauren wanted to throw a penny into the water and make a wish. She held that penny so tight in her little fist and consintrated for a long time on her wish. It had to be a good one. I guess. She didn't want that penny to go to waste.

When she finally hucked that peice of copper into the water, I decided to ask what her wish was. Her answer? She said "I want to be just like you." It made me cry. See guys! That is what "Mother's day" is all about!

I love spring!!

I love so many things about spring. I love to open up all my windows and let fresh air run through my house. I love listening to my kids laughter as then play outside. I love trips to the park and zoo. I love how everything feels new again, a fresh start. Like all the mistakes of last year are done, learned from and now in the past. I really never feel like we are into a new year untill I see the first signs of spring. We have been making the most of the nice weather. On monday, I met up with my friends Calena and Keri and there cute kids at Buess Pond. It was really cute to see the kids playing.

I didn't get a picture of Keri with her kids. I wish I did. Oh well, next time. When I told Lauren that she was going to play with Aiden that day, she said "I went on a date with him!!" It was funny. I think she was thinking of the GNOs where she and Aiden eat together.

An other thing I love about spring is the spring showers. I love rain. I love how it smells and feels. Lauren and Evan love it too. They get so excited when it rains. We always put a blanket on the patio outside and watch the rain and lightning. I love Chad and I can share our love of storms with Lauren and Evan.

Chad is such a good dad. Lauren and Evan love him so much.

Yesterday when Chad got home from work-we all went outside and played. Last year Lauen had told Chad that she wanted a pink trampoline. So, Chad being the softy that he is, spray painted our tramp pink. I love it. I love it because Lauren loves it so much.

Evan is signing "bird". I thought it was cute :)

Who knew Lauren could climb a tree? It is a small tree, but still, who knew?

This look on Evan's face makes me laugh. What a funny boy.

Yes, we love spring. I get so excited thinking of everything we can do this summer. I can't wait to go swimming, and to the zoo. All the parks we can go to...Yes, I am excited for spring.

Evan's Protest

I don't know, you tell me. But I am thinking that Evan doesn't like to have his face clean.

Mother's Day Mussings.

Just like every other month of May, my mind wanders and I think of my own Mother. As all my faithful blog readers can attest to, the months of April and May are the hardest months for me. April is when my mom and I stoped talking. There was no explosive argument. That had happened months before. We danced around that elephent untill it couldn't be ignored anymore. After months of acramony, we just stoped talking. And, of course, May is the month of Mother's day. I dread this holiday almost from the start of each new year. I am gearing myself up for an other Sunday where I hear praises of other's Mothers. I am the Sunbeams teacher in our ward, and the primary kids are learning a beautiful song about mothers that they will sing during sacrament on Mother's day. Every time they practice it, I have to remind myself not to start crying. Tiny little innocent voices singing about the love of a mother is almost more then I can handle. Don't get me wronge, I love that daugters everywhere have a mother to call when they get wonderful news, or when they are in need of comfort. I love that they have someone to call when they are just to sick to take care of their kids that day, or call for just a friendly chat. It's just that I don't have that, and I want it just as much as my lungs want air.
Each time this time of year rolls around, Chad always reminds me that this holiday is mine, because I am a mom. He tells me that this holiday is to honor my role in our family. Although I love him for his attempts to cheer me up, I can't help be feeling just a little bit sorry for myself. I see mothers and daughters shopping in the mall, and it tugs at me. I wonder if those daughters know how lucky they are to have someone in there life that loves them unconditionally? I wonder what could be wrong with me. My mother's love for me came with conditions. When I didn't meet those conditions, I lost her. Maybe not her love, I am sure she loves me. She is after all my mother. But I lost the "privilege" of having a supportive presants in my life. Is a princable more important then a person? Is being right more powerful then the heart of your child?
I have received phone calls from family and friends telling me about how broken hearted my mom is. Each time I tell them that I am here, waiting for the day that my mom will knock on my door. I hope for that moment and fear it at the same time. This is how we communicate these days, through the mouth of others. After those conversations, I know that what I say will get back to my mom, so I wait, certain that my message of needing her would have fallen on her ears. But I wait in vain. No knock lands on the wood of my door, no letter makes it into the depths of my mail box. And although I love that she gives my kids cards and toys, I want her to give the gift of herself so much more. It is like looking into a cloudless sky and yearning for a rain drop. I have no idea what her number might be or where she is living at. She has moved around a couple of times since she and my dad divorced. She knows where I am while I am in the dark as to where she might be. Even in this little silent war of hers, she is still holding the strings, she is still the puppet master, just like it was when I was a child in her home.
I am afraid of her. My own mother. She has taken away my confidence in who I am. If your own mother can't accept you, warts and all, then how can you expect anyone else to? I know what I can do to have my mom finally come knocking at my door, but it is a sacrifice I am not willing to make. Chad is the love of my life, the father of my children. It wouldn't be just my sacrifice, it would be my children's as well. To take them away from a loving father, how is that a good idea for anyone involved? I will not apologize for the love I have for him.
I now question how I parent my own children every single day of their lives. Evan is easier for me, and not because he is an easier child. In many ways, he is more demanding then Lauren. It is because he is my son, a boy. Lauren is a girl, my daughter. I screwed up my first "mother/daughter" relationship. I don't want to ruin the one I have with her. I worry all the time when it comes to her. I remember holding her for the first time in the hospital all by myself. No nurses, no visitors, and no Chad. Just me and my little baby. I looked into her big blue eyes, the deep color of blueberries. She was this little bundle with skin the color of peach's and cream and a smell that was twice as sweet. Her gaze was so open and honest. I felt so close to this little spirit in my arms. And as she grows, her light just grows with her. She is so tender hearted. Even at her age, she never says anything bad about an other person. If someone took a toy away from her, she tells me that maybe they needed the toy more then her. She is so concerned about the safety of her little brother, and her little friends that she might be playing with. She pulls little kids away from the edge of the water when we are at the duck pond, and she gives her last piece of bread to a crying little girl she never met before so that crying little girl will smile. Her now green eyes are not the eyes of a four year old, but the eyes of a soul much older and wiser then her tender years. She uses big words like "stupendous" and "exceptional". She throws her skinny arms around me and gives me hug full of so much love and need as her long hair drips down my arm like syrup. But even though I have been blessed with this "exceptionally stupendous" little lady, I find myself constantly second guessing every move I make as a mother to her. Am I doing what in right by my little Lauren? Am I being to hard on her? Am I being to soft with her? Am I being judgemental? Am I letting her be her, helping her spread her wings instead of clipping them?
I have good memories of my mom too. I remember once, I was in second grade and I heard over the speaker that hung just above our blackboard in the relocatable that was my class room the secratary informing Mr. Olsen that "Melissa Flaten's mother is here to pick her up for her Dr's appointment." I gathered my things while thinking to myself that I didn't even realize that I had a Dr.'s appointment that day. I walked across the then abandoned playground and into the school building where my mom was waiting for me at the front desk. To my surprise, my mom took me not to a Dr's appointment, but to the mall instead. For no reason at all, just because. That was a great day. It is hard for me to reconcile those fun memories with the sad ones.
I make mistakes. I am learning and growing. I feel sometimes like a misfit toy. You know the ones in Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer? I feel like I have been sent to the island of misfit toys by my mom, my brother and my sisters. I ache to pick up the phone and call my little sister, but every time I do, she is always to busy to talk. She is the only one of my family (besides my dad) that I have a semi-relationship with. And yet, when ever she visits, I don't even know she is in town untill she calls me on her way back to the airport to fly back home. It hurts me. I feel banished by the ones who should love me far and above anyone else. And what is my crime? Standing by my husband, loving him fericly, taking my temple convents I made with him seriously? I will not let Lauren ever feel that kind of abandonment. I will always carry around this hollow hole in my heart, but she will never have the same kind of hole to carry if I can help it.
I cling to the acceptance that Chad's sisters have for me, and I Cherish the love that both of Chad's moms have shown me. I treasure the love that Chad's dad gives me. I think these little gifts of family mean more to me then any other gift I could be given. Little things that Chad's family does for me fills me with wonder. Traci calling me her sister, Shari giving me advice when I need it, Kari being there for me as a strong and sturdy support. Ryan's advice for me as I struggle to work out and get back in shape. Even Dawn, Nikki and Jennifer loving my kids and me as if I were always a part of the family. All of these little things make me feel like I am part of a family again.
I am totally rambling, I don't know where I am going with this. All I know is that my kids will always have me there, no matter what. It was just me, then Chad loved me and took me for his own. He gave me a home, he gave me a daughter and then a son, and he will continue to be my family. Family. What a simple word for such a complex multi-fasited concept. I love my family. All I want is for Lauren and Evan to know that when they cry, I will be there. If they should fall (literally and figurativly), I will catch them. When they feel sad, they need not feel alone. I think that as long as they know their mother loves them unconditionally (which is how a mother should love), then all the mistakes I make won't matter to much. Because I am a Mother, in the truest meaning of the word.

My son, the dog (we are so proud of him)

The late great Winstion Churchill said "To everyone, there comes a special moment when he is figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a special thing unique to them, fitted to his talents; What a tragedy if that moment finds him unprepared or unqualified for the work which would have been his finest hour." I am just hoping that what happened last night after dinner wasn't Evan's grand oppertunity. If it was, however, he lived up to his potential beautifully. You see, I make this delicious pasta that my kids love as well as the grown ups. When Lauren was a baby, she would lick the plate after she ate this super good pasta, and now she always asks for seconds. If you have ever seen Lauren eat (picture a small bird) then you would know how monumental that act alone is. Evan loves it too, and apperently, so does our dog. We let our dog lick the plates after we eat (saves me time when I do the dishes. The plates are already "rinsed off" so to speak). I have imagined my son on the other end of a football, or perhaps sitting behind the resolute desk in the Oval Office. My loafty dreams from him didn't include licking a plate off the floor like a dog, but apperently that is what makes him happy, so who am I to stop him? Instead I told Chad to come quick and check out Evan. Once Chad got a load of what Evan was up to, do you think he stopped him, since obviously Evan's mom isn't about to. Nope. Instead he grabed the camera to document our son's greatest acheivment in his short life for posterity.

When it looked as if all the sauce was licked up by either boy or beast, Evan just signed that he wanted more. Being the good mom that I am, I went ahead and put more sauce on the plate and laughed as Evan had at it again. (don't judge me).

When he was done, he just looked up and laughed with a look of deep satisfaction on his face that few would acheive. Our dog, being the thoughtful little girl that she is, cleaned off Evan's face for him.

All in all, it was more entertaining then Dancing with the Stars. My funny boy. There is never a dull moment when you share your house with children.

Why I love Chad

The last thing on Chad's to do list on Saturday was go to a book store and then go to IKEA all day long. But when I looked longingly into his eyes and did my little begging sigh, he had no choice then to agree. I had gotten a gift card to Borders Books for Christmas from Debbie, and since the closest Borders is in Salt Lake, it took untill now for me to use it. We drove all the way to Borders, and if I was being honest I would say that Chad was a little teny tiny bit cranky. But he went anyway. Once he got a little caffine flowing throuh his blood, he was a little bit cheerier. I got Lauren the new Fancy Nancy book (which she has been carring around with her since we bought it). And I got a book called "Two Rivers". I love new books. I love old books. I just love all books. I love the smell of them, and the feel of them in my hands as I devore a new story. It bugs me on that Clean Sweep show how they make them get rid of all there books if they haven't read them in 6 months. I would never give up my books. Each time I open one, it is like revisiting an old friend. So thank you Chad for taking me all the way to Salt Lake with two fussy kids, just so I can get one new book. After I got a new book, we drove to IKEA. I love IKEA. Once we get where we want to be finaclly, I am going to turn my whole house into an IKEA show room. It is almost overwhelming for me to go there. Everything there is exactly my taste. You can keep your R.C Willeys and your Tie Pan Trading, I will take IKEA! We had been going going going all day long. By the time we left the Mecca of home decor, we were starving. Chad drove back to Ogden and was on his way to Del Taco when I told him just how much I love Cafe Rio (hint hint). He asked if I wanted a burrito there and of course I said Heck yes! So he waited in the car for a half an hour while I waited in line at Cafe Rio. What a guy. Then when we got done at Cafe Rio, we drove to Del Taco to get Chad his burger and frys. But guess who ate all the frys on the way home? I was hungery, and there they were. What's a hungry girl to do? Anyway, Chad just laughed at me. And he is right. He hasn't been able to have frys in 6 years because of yours truely. I won't order frys myself, but if they are there-hot and waiting in a bag that sits on my lap-I just can't help myself. All day long, Chad catered to what I wanted. To me, that is true romance. I bet if you asked him, he would have much rather stayed at home and blow up bad robot guys on his computer game thing. That game can keep his attention longer then I can, and he forgoed the oppertunity to play it all day, and instead let me do all that I wanted to. Flowers and chocolates mean nothing when compared to that. Oh and plus, he is such a good daddy. Lauren and Evan just love crawling all over him and playing with him. You never know when you get married if the man you choose to be with for all eternity will be a good dad or not. I got lucky. Thanks for the great day Chad, I love you with all my heart!

(these are pictures of Chad playing with the kids, and our furry baby Radley.)

I have written alot about Lauren this week. But you are going to have to hear about her just one more time. She just says the funniest things!! I have to write them down or ealse I will forget.

BACKSTORY: Lauren had picked some "sunflowers" (that is what she calls dandylions), and put them in a little cup with some water. The next morning she went to go check on her flowers, but they had died. She was sooo sad. This is the conversation that followed.

LAUREN: Mommy, come quick! I need your help!
ME(running to see, because by the sound of her voice, I am thinking she must be stuck somewhere or hurt): What is it?
LAUREN: My flowers died and I don't know what to do about it. I am so sad. Help them Mommy. Give them some water to make them all better.
ME: After you pick flowers, they start to die Lauren, there is nothing I can do. Let's go pick some more.
LAUREN: I don't want new ones. I want these to be resurected.

Ok, I just thought it was so funny that she said she wanted her flowers to be resurected. And I was impressed that she used the word right.

BACKSTORY: We were at the mall. Chad was getting his hair cut and we were just walking the mall waiting for him to get done. We just passed a shoe store.

LAUREN: I want some new church shoes mommy.
ME: Not today Lauren.
LAUREN: Please Mommy. I have been wanting them for so long a time.
ME: No Lauren, we are not buying anything today.
LAUREN: But I wanted them for years and years and years..
ME: Really? Years and Years huh? How many years exactly?
LAUREN: For like 5 years! (umm..really. She is four.)

BACKSTORY: My favorite thing to do with my kids is when Chad and I are just hanging out on our bed with Lauren and Evan. We were doing that one day when Lauren turned to Chad and I and said..

LAUREN: Mommy, you are my one true love. And Daddy, you are my prince.

So stinkin' sweet! I love my sweet tender loving funny smart dramatic little baby girl.
